Predicting Cat-astrophes

Do cats really have the power to predict future tragedies? While this notion may seem ridiculous, there’s a lot of research out there that could support it. In this article, we’ll explore some examples and leave it up to you to decide for yourself.

Let’s start with the story of Oscar, a cat from Rhode Island that was raised in the dementia unit of a nursing home. It’s been said that he has the unique ability to sense when a patient is in their final hours of life. He’ll just wander into the patient’s room and take up residence. The staff has been extremely grateful for his gift (that has been proven time and time again) because it allows them to contact the patient’s loved ones with time to say goodbye. But it’s not just Oscar. Since the time his gift was featured on the news, other cats with the same ability began to gain recognition around the country.

Cats’ “psychic powers” don’t stop at predicting someone’s passing. There are some who believe cats can also predict earthquakes and other such events. In 1976, cat owners throughout Italy had a similar story. Apparently, a large number of cats were frantically scratching at the front door to be let out. They went out and found hiding places. Lo and behold, a few hours later there was an earthquake. Something similar happened in China, where the bizarre behavior of a city’s cats prompted officials to evacuate. Good thing too, because an earthquake hit and 150,000 people had been placed out of harm’s way.

Do you have goose bumps yet? Perhaps cats DO possess some extraordinary power. But is it psychic? Scientists aren’t so sure. You see, ancient cats were predators. This means they had a heightened sense of touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste. There is a belief that over time, cats’ senses became so sensitive, that these phenomena could be explained. As a person nears death, their body chemistry begins to change. It’s possible that Oscar was attracted to a certain smell that a person wouldn’t know existed. And it’s possible that cats can sense the minute tremors in the earth before a quake. Vibrations so small, people can’t feel them at all.

One thing is for certain, cats are excellent companions. We love them for their company, unique quirks and independent nature. But who knows? One day a cat’s clairvoyance might even save your life.
